A Revolutionary Medical Education Methodology
Dr. David Lenihan had an idea for a new system of education. It would use a digitally enhanced, flipped-classroom format, with lectures delivered online and in-class time devoted to active learning and application of theories. Class activities would generate data points that could be used to provide personalized advising for each student – advice about which topics they needed to work on most, and career advice for those who might excel outside of medicine.
Dr. Lenihan implemented an early version of his methodology at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York, resulting in better results for the program’s Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) students and higher enrollments for the medical school. In 2013, the program was ready to expand. With support from University Partners, Tiber Health Innovation Corporation, a public benefit corporation, was born.
A Nationwide Network of University Partners
Tiber took its methodology to Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) in 2014, establishing a Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS) based on the first year of pre-clinical coursework in PHSU’s MD program. The success of this program led to better student outcomes and strong growth for PHSU, and in 2019, the MSMS curriculum, powered by Tiber Health’s methodology and predictive analytics, became available to partner universities for the first time.
Today, Tiber Health’s university partner network includes colleges and universities across the United States. Our university partners serve diverse student populations, and the programs we deliver are empowering a new generation of diverse health care practitioners.
About Dr. David Lenihan, Ceo of Tiber Health
Dr. Lenihan is an experienced educator, innovator, and medical practitioner. He is passionate about improving access to medical education for students of all backgrounds and income levels. Tiber Health was born out of that passion, and it remains the core of everything we do.
The Tiber Health educational model is inspired by students at Ponce Health Sciences University in Puerto Rico, where Dr. Lenihan served as President, and the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York, where he served as Associate Dean.
Dr. Lenihan’s methodology is fundamentally changing the way medical education is taught, moving from lecture-focused passive learning to active, dynamic learning in flipped classrooms.
